Feeder Roaches
Feeder Roaches
Contact me for more info on these roaches!
Commonly kept as feeder insects for reptiles and other exotic pets. Proper care is essential to ensure their health and nutritional value for the animals that consume them. Here's a detailed care guide for Feeder roaches:
1. Housing:
- Use a well-ventilated container as their enclosure. A plastic or glass tank with a secure lid works well.
- Provide hiding spots using egg cartons or cardboard tubes to reduce stress.
2. Temperature and Humidity:
- Maintain a temperature between 80-95°F (27-35°C) for quicker reproduction. Use a heat mat or heat lamp to achieve this temperature range.
- Keep humidity levels between 40-60%. Mist the enclosure with water if needed but avoid making it too wet, as excessive moisture can lead to mold.
3. Substrate:
- Tiny amounts of substrate can be used in the enclosure to allow small nymphs to hide out (Not Necessary)
4. Feeding:
- Feed roaches a balanced diet to ensure the nutritional quality for the animals consuming them.
- Provide a high-quality roach chow or a mix of grains, vegetables, and fruits. Offer fresh food regularly and remove any uneaten items to prevent mold or spoilage.
- Offer protein in the form of Fish flakes, turtle pellets etc.
- Ensure a constant source of water by using water crystals or water gel. Alternatively, you can provide water in a shallow dish with cotton balls to prevent drowning.
5. Breeding:
- If you plan to breed these roaches, maintain a higher humidity level (around 60-70%).
- Try to keep your Female to male ratio around 4:1 population to prevent stress on females and to prevent aggressive behavior in males.
- Provide a dark hiding place for pregnant females to give birth.
6. Cleaning:
- Regularly clean the enclosure to remove feces and uneaten food, preventing the buildup of bacteria and unpleasant odors.
- Replace the substrate/ hides every couple weeks as needed.
7. Handling:
- Feeder roaches are generally easy to handle, but it's essential to be gentle to avoid stressing them.
- Wash your hands before and after handling to prevent the transfer of oils or contaminants.
